Welcome to Chaucer School .
Chaucer School is a growing central Auckland primary school catering for the learning needs of students from age 5 (Year 1) to 11 years (Year 6). The school is situated in Blockhouse Bay set on an open site in a quiet neighbourhood with easy access to local transit routes. The school has large grounds with well established trees and modern facilities.
Chaucer is a small school of 250 children in 11 classes. This size gives the school a friendly family type atmosphere which is well connected to its community. Class sizes are small especially in the junior school where it is critical that students develop a sound foundation in literacy and numeracy.
The Chaucer School team is a conscientious, caring, hard working group of professionals who have high expectations of your children and their learning. The teachers are regularly involved in ongoing school wide professional development. Chaucer offers quality educational programmes that are child centred to meet the learning needs of each student.
At Chaucer School we believe that education is a life long process and an integral part of this is a shared partnership between school and home. Chaucer has an open door policy and parents are encouraged to participate in any way they can. We offer parents as many opportunities to learn about their child’s learning as possible. Reports are sent home three times a year and these are supported by three way conferences involving the student, parent and teacher. This reporting is in plain language and details where the child is at against the national curriculum levels.
Chaucer School places emphasis on educating the whole child and thus children are fully involved in interschool sport, choir and cultural festivals and in drama and music productions. In 2012 Chaucer will be offering afterschool and weekend sports teams in netball, kiwi tag, flippa ball and soccer.
Chaucer School has undergone many changes over the last three years. The whole school exterior has been repainted and three quarters of our classrooms have been refurbished in the last year. The grounds have also undergone work with much planting, further development of vegetable gardens and planting of an orchard.
As well as these physical changes, further changes have taken place to the organisation and systems within the school. A four block day was introduced to create shorter teaching blocks and to optimise learning time. The new national curriculum (NZC) has been introduced and is fully implemented into our teaching and learning programmes . Chaucer School has developed whole school integrated units which are aligned to the NZC and relevant to our learners. A common language of learning is used from new entrants to Year 6 and regular teacher professional development and learning ensures consistency of practices across the school.
Chaucer School is a great place to be. Enjoy your tour of our website.
